This site will chronicle a bicycle ride from Melbourne to Broome via Alice Springs and hopefully raise funds for the Freedom Wheels project of Technical Aids to the Disabled [TAD].
This is my third long distance ride. Despite left side paralysis [hemiplegia] I have bicycled upwards of 14,000 kms solo around Australia.
The TAD program is an Australia wide initiative supported in part by government and private funding but also draws heavily upon community and volunteer support. Its’ national office is in Victoria but there are TAD offices in all States.
As a disabled person who relies almost completely on their bicycle for mobility I feel a strong connection with the work TAD does in engineering transport/mobility solutions adapted to the individual needs of people with a disability.
The TAD Freedom Wheels project is exceptional in its’ focus on bicycling solutions for children. The project is a joint undertaking between TADs throughout Australia and AMWAY.
More detailed information about this program is available in the project pamphlet downloadable by clicking the link under “My Links” in the side bar menu on the right of this page.
On behalf of the project I’m seeking support from individuals and organisations. People can assist in many ways including;
- Sponsoring the ride by donating;
- Money to the project directly
- Equipment or services or time and expertise to any of TAD’s other projects
- Supporting the rider with direct non cash assistance such as:
- Accommodation or food along the way.
- Camping equipment.
- Cycling equipment or services,
- Advice or shared expertise
- Advertising the project in local communities
This trip will be documented including photograps on this blog/website and details will also appear on TAD’s national website.
Details of all sponsors/supporters and their contributions are featured.
Details of previous trips from Sydney to Perth across the Nullarbor, and from Brisbane to Perth via Broome are accessible by clicking the link under “Previous Rides” in the side bar menu on the right of this page.
Becoming a sponsor or supporter is a good way of obtaining exposure for your product or business, supporting a good cause and helping to improve the quality of life of the many people with a disability that TAD assists year after year particularly children.
All donations to TAD are fully tax deductible in Australia.

The header looks good though don’t you think
A perfect header for the blog – says it all
Hi Steve, thanks for your comment on my blog – and, yes, of course you can make a link to that post. Your bike ride looks amazing. I am on holiday at the moment, and it’s hard to blog, but I’ll put a link to your site when I get back … best of luck to you on your journey
Best wishes
Joanna
Thanks Joanna – done – enjoy your holiday
Hi Steve,
Yes, I can relate to the fact that travelling helps to get you in touch with living one day at a time, and that you only are really present in the moment that you are in ( very buddhist?) Especially the type of travel that you are doing. Very close to the ground and physically connected to your own body and the physical environment= a sense of immediacy and connection?? I’ll stay tuned…
Wendy
Hi Wendy nice to hear from you
